GayCityUSA Interviews

Sweden's Newest Gay Pop Star,

Bimbo Boy!

GayCityUSA: Bimbo Boy, how did you get that name?

Bimbo Boy: Ever since I was a kid I've looked up to sexy female artists such as Marilyn Monroe and they were often called bimbos by the media. I think that's wrong. Sex isn't something bad. So I wanted to call myself 'bimbo' to get a discussion started. Why aren't men called bimbos? And of course it's quite provocative for a boy to call himself a bimbo since it only seems to apply women. Bimbo Boy is something different that doesn't follow the stream. People notice it.

GayCityUSA: What's your real name, how old, and where are you from?

Bimbo Boy: My real name is Dennis Svedberg Hellström and I grew up in the small town of Sandviken in Sweden. I was born in 1984, so that makes me 22 this year.

GayCityUSA: How did you start in the music business?

Bimbo Boy: I come from a musically talented family and I have been singing since I was a very young boy. I wrote a couple of songs, "You (Are My Life)" and "I Won't Do It For Free", and got the chance to record them in 2002.

GayCityUSA: How would you describe yourself?

Bimbo Boy: I'm considered to be a little feminine and maybe that is seen better when I hang out with my girlfriends. Well, maybe I am 'typically gay'. My favorite colors are pink and light purple.

GayCityUSA: When did you 'come out' and how did it go over?

Bimbo Boy: I came out during senior high school at 16 years old in a newspaper article. It worked out pretty well except for some occasional comments in school, but I was already used to being hazed because I was very overweight when I was younger. Those times were very hard and I have a lot of baggage that I still try to work with and handle. Maybe that is one of the reasons I think it's important to continue being myself and not adjusting.

GayCityUSA: What's your message to young gay people today?

Bimbo Boy: I think we have to talk more about people's differences and their right to be themselves. To be open and straightforward with my opinions and values is important to me. My homosexuality is a part of who I am and I let it show pretty quick when I meet new people. I wish that every parent would talk to their children about everyone's equal value and also homosexuality so it can become more accepted.

GayCityUSA: Tell us about your new hit single, "Drama Queen".

Bimbo Boy: Well, "Drama Queen" has been out since March in Sweden, and is starting to get noticed in the U.S. now. It is synth-disco-pop mixed together with a glamorous 80's sound. I have been busy promoting it by doing interviews with radio D.J.s in Sweden.

GayCityUSA: And the video for "Drama Queen"?

Bimbo Boy: The video was done by Johnny K. Wu and premiered in Cleveland at The Grid. That was a blast! It can be found at: www.DramaQueenVideo.com
