Provincetown's
"drag queen extraordinaire"
Pearlene Dubois interviews
Kevin Cahoon
for GayCityUSA.com

Pearlene: Have you ever been to Provincetown?

Kevin: No, I have never been to P Town, but I hear it is beautiful and a blast. I would love to visit. Something to look forward to.

Pearlene: You should, it's the gayest town in America!

Pearlene: What is your favorite Divine flick?

Kevin: I wish I had seen more Divine flicks....of course 'Hairspray', 'Pink Flamingos' I have never seen, but have heard about the cuisine Divine partakes in.I have to rent that, what a brilliant, original artist. It is people like Divine that have such a huge impact on culture in ways that people don't realize until they are gone. Hindsight is 20/20. It's a shame she isn't here to get the accolades she deserves. Maybe she knows.

Pearlene: Why is being the first Teen Male Vocalist Grand Champion on "Star
Search" so embarrassing?

Kevin: I am not embarrassed about 'Star Search' at all. It was an awesome thing to be a part of and something cool to look back on and say that you accomplished. I was 13 and it really didn't even dawn on me what a big deal it was at the time.

Pearlene: How has it affected you?

Kevin: It opened doors and avenues to me that I wasn't privy to before. I went back home to Texas, went to High School and would spend my summers in New York, auditioning, and such. I guess all 80's television has a tongue and cheek quality to it in 2006, but it was a great time and something that I am proud of.

Pearlene: I see you as the Emcee of "Cabaret".Can you see it happening?

Kevin: I would love to do 'Cabaret'. What a fantastic role and the latest Broadway production was genius beyond genius.I auditioned after it had been open, but I think I was too young. Next time.

Pearlene: Which was more fun to play, Hedwig or Rocky?

Kevin: I have to say 'Hedwig' was incredible. That's something else that I can't believe happened to me. To open that cast recording and see my name or watch the documentary on the DVD and be a part of it… awesome. That score and that story are so brilliant, the show spoke to so many people on so many different levels, it allowed the arts community in New York to see me in a whole other light. It really is a role that comes along once in a lifetime. You play all the characters, front a rock band, throw in a little standup. It's everything. It gave me the confidence to form Ghetto Cowboy and perform my own music- that show gave so much to me. 'Rocky' was great fun as well. Proud to have been a part of that too. What a great cast!

Pearlene: Speaking of Ghetto Cowboy, tell us about your new release, 'Doll'...

Kevin: 'Doll' is my debut album with my band Ghetto Cowboy. I wanted it to be an album of liberation for anyone whoever felt on the outside. It is inspired by all of the music I grew up listening to and the lyrics are inspired by things I have observed, people I have known. It has a city energy to it, very New York in it's scope- slightly funny, maybe a little dangerous to some...I am so proud of it.I hope people listen to it and want to dance or act it out while they are alone in their bedroom, that would be a huge compliment. It's very theatrical; it has a beginning, a middle , an end, sort of takes you on a journey. It took me on journey that is for sure. The album is about being who you are and taking the ride.

DOLL - IN STORES APRIL 18!
