GayCityUSA Interviews

Openly Gay Singer and Songwriter

Laura Wolfe

GayCityUSA:  Hi Laura, for those of us who haven't heard much about you yet, can you tell us some background about yourself and how you got started in music?

Laura:  Well, I grew up in the home of a professional musician, so I was exposed to lots of great music young in life.  I started writing songs as a kid.  In my house we expressed ourselves through music in ways we couldn’t do through conversation alone.  I remember singing to my Mom at the dinner table rather than talking.  Music is my first language and love it so even though I am creative in other ways- I like to dance and write etc, music is my home.  I think my favorite part about being a musical artist is getting to communicate in a language that transcends differences and separation.  I love that about the art of making music.

GayCityUSA:  What inspiration did you have for the title song on your debut full-length album, "Siren"?

Laura:  My inspiration to write "Siren" came from my researching the Greek myth of the sirens.  When I wrote it I wanted to challenge the popular association with the myth of the sirens; the temptress model.  I posed this question: What if the sirens were singing for each other?  What if their siren song had nothing to do with men, or with the sailors at all?  What if it was "a Siren’s love song"?  I wanted to tell the Siren’s story; my story, as a woman who loves other women, and as a femme who loves butch women.  As a woman who identifies as a femme I am saying to my butch lover, "make some noise-don’t let the talk of others silence you."  I feel butch women, who are more identifiable as lesbians, get slammed and silenced.  And really this goes for all of us, but in particular men and woman who push the edges of the prescribed gender roles and appearances.

GayCityUSA:  What is the biggest challenge you have faced thus far on your path to musical success?

Laura:  The biggest challenge on my path to musical success is my own fears really.  I think that’s the only thing that has stood in my way of success.  The more confident I am, and the more powerfully I stand in my own gifts, the more my career falls into place and I succeed.

GayCityUSA:  Who are some of your favorite leading ladies on the big screen?

Laura:  For technique Meryl Streep, for crushes Jodi Foster, for chutzpah Bette Midler, and for being hot and likeable Drew Barrymore.

GayCityUSA:  If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Laura:  Wow any artist?  I think I’d love to collaborate with a great bass player like Joni did with Jacko or a great Jazz guitar player like Stanley Jorden or even Pat Matheny.  For songwriting maybe Billy Joel he’s such a fantastic songwriter or Stevie Wonder that would be a dream.  I would also love to meet and/or collaborate with Bonnie Raitt- she is just so amazing and I respect and admire her so much.

GayCityUSA:  What's next for you?  Touring?  Another album?

Laura:  Next for me is definitely touring.  I am actively looking for a booker and I am looking forward to being on the road and playing a lot this year.  The next album I will do with a label in 2007.

GayCityUSA:  How can fans find out more information about you and your new album, "Siren"?
